Lab Architecture

The Lab architecture seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technologies to create a comprehensive environment for 5G, which includes a 5G core Network equipped with a gNodeb and a UE that allow the user to test the different end-to-end use cases in 5G.

Why this Lab ?

This Lab Introduces you to a step-by-step beginner-friendly exploration of the 5G and its architecture while gaining knowledge on the basic concepts (packet analysis, packet generation, DNS...) and tools (Wireshark, Scapy...) needed through the journey. 5G beginner Lab offers a hands-on yet very simple-to-follow first introduction to all of NGAP, SCTP, E2E monitoring, User plan, and the different tunnels used, and more... making it the core and base for the fellow 5G Labs on LabLabee catalog.

Lab Objectives

  • Develop the ability to distinguish between 4G and 5G networks in terms of speed, latency, architecture, and use cases.
  • Discover the advancements and the new technologies in 5G NR.
  • Explore the architecture of 5G networks, enabling you to understand how data flows within the 5G network functions.
  • Master various 5G protocols, including NGAP, GTP, SCTP, and HTTP2, and understand their functions within the network.
  • Understand the concept of NFV and its role in virtualizing network functions, a critical component of modern 5G networks.
  • Develop the ability to analyze network traffic effectively using Wireshark, a valuable skill for monitoring and troubleshooting 5G networks.
  • Explore packet inspection techniques with a focus on the Domain Name System (DNS) protocol, allowing you to analyze DNS queries and responses within 5G networks.
  • Gain insights into the establishment of end-to-end (E2E) connectivity in 5G networks, including the setup of Packet Data Unit (PDU) sessions and the role of User Plane Function (UPF) in data forwarding.
  • Explore 5G monitoring and develop the ability to identify the important parameters the are monitored and included inside the 5G core.
  • Gain insights into the Service-Based Architecture (SBA) of 5G networks, including the decomposition of network functions into modular services and the use of service-based interfaces for flexible and scalable network deployments.
